During Year 7, pupils will typically have 2 hours of PE covering a range of activities where they will develop their motor competence which are specific to the sport and physical activity. In Year 8 students continue to develop these skills but with greater depth as well as in more competitive situations. During the final year of KS3 students work on developing their knowledge of rules, strategies and tactics as well as having a focus on healthy participation. At KS4 the focus is on developing pupil’s understanding of the importance of living a healthy, active lifestyle as well as developing leadership skills to prepare them for life outside of school.

INTENT

The curriculum has been designed to allow opportunities for all students to develop competence to excel in a broad range of activities, to ensure that students are physically active for sustained periods of time, to give students the opportunities to engage in competitive sports and activities and to encourage all to lead healthy, active lives.

We aim to develop pupil’s skills and knowledge in key processes using relevant activities as a vehicle to enable pupils to develop as a performer as well as a whole person. The programme not only allows students to develop their technical and tactical ability, but it also allows them to develop their inter-personal and social skills. Key terminology and subject specific language are taught to improve students understanding and their ability to articulate ideas and solutions to problems which are encountered. Pupils will also develop their understanding of key areas which relate to their health, well-being as well as relevant anatomical and physiological aspects.

Our intent is that lessons and other opportunities will enable students to understand what makes a performance effective and how to apply these principles in their own and others’ work. Students should also develop the confidence and interest to get involved in exercise, sports and activities out of school and in later life and understand and apply the long-term benefits of physical activity.

Wider School Opportunities

The PE curriculum allows students to work collaboratively with others in problem solving situations and scenarios. Relevant, up to date examples are given of performers and performances in the world of sport and activities e.g. World Cups, Olympic games etc. which encourages student curiosity as well as their understanding of real-life scenarios. All lessons will work on developing key individual skills such as teamwork, communication, leadership, adhering to rules etc. which will prepare students for situations in the outside world.

Our extra-curricular provision allows students to be involved in a number of activities which give them the opportunity to deepen the key skills and attributes they have learnt in their lessons. It also provides some students with the chance to carry this out in competitive fixtures against other schools. Our extra-curricular focus is on encouraging as many students as possible to attend allowing them to engage in positive, healthy experiences in a range of activities.

Spiritual Moral Social and Cultural development

Spiritual development – pupils are given the opportunity to develop their aesthetic appreciation of their own and other’s work through the use of observation and analysis of practical work. Pupils are encouraged to develop their creativity in dance and gymnastics working individually as well as with others. We often use reflection on practices and this allows pupils to work on areas where they need to develop as well as where they are working well. Within game situations pupils work individually and with others to develop their understanding of tactics.

Moral development – Within PE there are always opportunities for all pupils to develop their respect for their peers, for staff as well as their ability to follow rules and work within boundaries. Game situations in lessons and inter-form matches alongside opportunities in extra-curricular activities allow all to develop their integrity and honesty. Rewards and sanctions are used to develop pupil understanding of right and wrong.

Social development – Within all lessons pupils are given opportunities to improve their skills in teamwork and leadership students whilst working with peers of mixed ability, mixed gender and religion. There are always opportunities to improve their coaching and officiating experiences. Co-operation is a key virtue in all lessons and is an invaluable skill for students to work on.

Cultural development – During lessons students are given opportunities to participate is sports from around the world and are taught about their cultural importance relating to sports history. Pupils are given numerous chances to take part in trips and visits to sporting fixtures and experiences such as international sporting matches in rugby as well as ski trips to foreign resorts. Pupils involved in participation in inter-school fixtures get the opportunity to play against students from different socio-economic backgrounds and cultures.
